"Border Patrol in Paradise" oil on linen, 42"x 58". Available for sale, contact artist. Giclee prints available. One of my favorite scenes along the Gallatin River, with the Spanish Peaks in the distance. This big painting was also inspired by a little 9x12 field study that I painted on this location one evening. Once again, these "braves" didn't accommodate me by being there, but it was not hard to imagine them having been there in ages gone by!
"Disappearing Act" oil on linen, 32"x44" Giclee prints available. Driving to my studio one Fall afternoon, these big beautiful clouds drifting over the Horseshoe Hills, stopped me in my tracks, I had to get some photos! The freeway and the town of Manhattan in the foreground of the photos, didn't seem to fit into the idea of the painting too well, so a more suitable sage brush, juniper, and chamissa scene was transpainted in!
"Indian Summer" oil on linen, 26"x 42". Sold. Giclee prints available. This beautiful native dancer, in her traditional dance regalia, was one of my favorites in the whole "Powwow" cultural gathering. I wanted the background or setting to accentuate the idea of being a part of, and in harmony with the natural world in which they live.
"Moon of the Painted Leaves" oil on linen, 26"x 42", Sold. Giclee prints available. Another beautiful, proud, and graceful traditional dancer, that inspired me.
"Autumn Song" oil on linen, 18.5"x 30", Sold. Giclee prints available. Sometimes, a subject matter is so inspiring, it demands multiple paintings to explore the idea, and discover the beauty!
"The Nike Generation" oil on linen, 33.5"x 18". Available for sale, contact artist. I was struck by the contrast of these native people all so proudly dressed in their traditional costumes, so beautifully decorated in such a personal, individual way....and then the children dressed in the convenient, generic Walmart clothes of a modern society where the individual artistic touches of culture and pride were completely gone!
"Going to the Sun" oil on linen, 18"x 38", Sold Giclee prints available. This painting started out as a landscape, but the buyer requested that I add the native traveler to give it more historic feel!
"Jingle Dancer" oil on board, 16"x 12", Sold. Giclee prints available. All of these native dancers, in their varied costumes, give me a chance to do "figurative" work, which is still about my favorite type of subject matter!
"Sadie" oil on linen, 28"x 24" This was a commissioned portrait of a young Northern Cheyenne girl, in her "jiggle dance" dress. Sadie is even more of a bright, joyous, and lovable young lady than what I was able to capture...but that was the high mark for which I was aiming! I wanted to put her in a setting that reflects her deep Montana prairie/mountain Norther Cheyenne heritage. I love the beautiful soft colors that appear when the sun is just setting and the full moon is rising, the earth's shadow just beginning to show on the eastern horizon, but yet the sun is still giving a warm glow to Sadie's face and the middle distance. Her dance regalia is made up of some of the same beautiful purples and blue-greens, and golds of the surrounding breath taking hues of Mother Nature!
