I had intended to paint on location, but the temperature dropped to below zero during the day as a cold front moved in, so I contented myself with taking photos, and saved the painting for the warmth of my studio. Even from a distance, when a bull walks into evening light, he can be easily seen and distinguished... his tan, almost white sides, and antlers, flashing. It is quite a thrilling sight, and like this bull, a thrilling sound! After all the time I have spent every Fall, in close proximity to elk, with either a bow or a camera, I still never get tired of hearing a bull bugle, or cows and calves calling back and forth with meows and whines. They are such majestic animals!</image:caption>

This studio painting, was inspired by a little field study I painted standing in the frozen over creek bottom. The cabin is at the trail head of Porcupine Creek drainage. I love the affect of freshly fallen snow on a landscape, "when the storm has passed", the wildlife all come out to feed, the warm colored evening light washing over the quiet, hushed world. The cold high pressure air that settles in after the storm, causes ice crystals to form in the air, that sparkle in the setting sun!</image:caption>

It was destroyed in the Montana Trails Gallery gas explosion in 2009. Originally, I hiked up to this spot, in the dark and set up my painting gear, and then started painting fast and furious, as the sun came up and started bathing everything in beautiful morning light. I was only able to get about half the field study done before the light had changed too much to be able to continue. This is a view from Wapiti Ridge, with Sage Peak in the background, all of this country being in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness area. When we first discovered this beautiful area, in 1989, it was an elk paradise. After the reintroduction of wolves in "95" little by little the elk have pretty much disappeared from this landscape. With a predator like the wolf, the elk just could not survive in this country they obviously preferred. One by one the elk were being picked off, being in smaller groups in terrine where they could not see the wolves coming. Now the elk congregate the first part of Sept. in large herds out in the wide open private ranches in the Madison Valley, where they have a better chance of survival against the wolves. It is heart breaking now, to go back to this beautiful elk country, and then to hardly see a single elk or hear a single bugle!</image:caption>

I came home with some of the best field study paintings I had ever done. <image:caption>"Sadie" oil on linen, 28"x 24" This was a commissioned portrait of a young Northern Cheyenne girl, in her "jiggle dance" dress. Sadie is even more of a bright, joyous, and lovable young lady than what I was able to capture...but that was the high mark for which I was aiming! I wanted to put her in a setting that reflects her deep Montana prairie/mountain Norther Cheyenne heritage. I love the beautiful soft colors that appear when the sun is just setting and the full moon is rising, the earth's shadow just beginning to show on the eastern horizon, but yet the sun is still giving a warm glow to Sadie's face and the middle distance. Her dance regalia is made up of some of the same beautiful purples and blue-greens, and golds of the surrounding breath taking hues of Mother Nature!</image:caption>

Many times I have stood overlooking a scene, and though the animals, or riders are not there, it is easy to envision them being there, and thus a painting idea is born. In Charlie Russell's masterpiece, "When the Land Belonged to God" I envisioned him standing there above the Missouri River looking over this scene, and though the buffalo were long gone into the pages of history books, he could see them filling this scene as far as the eye could see.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Extravagant Neighborhood" oil on linen, 24"x 36", Sold. Giclee prints available. A good friend and neighbor, approached me about doing a little drawing or "something" for him of this little cabin. He had an old curled up black and white photo of the scene. He had grown up going to this cabin with his family, for hunting trips, summer outings etc. but a few years later, the cabin and the whole surrounding area had burned in a forest fire. When I saw the photo, I knew what it could become, and I also knew my friend had no clue of what I could do with the information on the little photo! I really didn't want to "waste" the good reference material and opportunity, on just a drawing, so I decided to "go for it" and do the painting I knew it should be! I turned it into a sunset lighting with the colorful clouds, and added the pack string, and the inviting light in the window and smoke coming out of the stovepipe. Because his stated budget for the project was for a drawing, I decided to have a couple giclee prints made of the painting, one for him and one for his sister, which was about price of what a drawing would have been. When he came to pick up his "drawing", he was so blown away, that big "tough guy" Mike was on the verge of tears! Then he blew me away, when he told me he didn't want the print, he wanted the original! When I told him how much the painting would be, he just said, "I don't care, I want the original"! When he gave his sister the giclee print, she did begin crying...she and her husband had spent their honeymoon in that cabin!</image:caption>

Then after weeks of planning, of scouting, of packing, the anticipation growing...the day finally arrives! They leave before the crack of dawn, to canoe into the wilderness to set up their camp and get situated for the two week adventure. Arriving to the camp spot just before sunset, the unthinkable happens! The adrenaline kicks in, bull fever empties the brain of any rational or logical thoughts, and with the pull of the trigger the moose hunt is over. The thrill of a life time, the high fives, the whooping and hollering soon give way to the reality of their situation. Exhausted from canoeing all day, they now get to spend half the night or all of it, trying to reduce a huge bull moose into pieces they can actually move from the water into the tangled willows, and that's all while trying to hold a flash light that seems to be getting dimmer by the minute. Finally at dawn's early light, they stumble into what was suppose to be camp, and climb into their bedrolls on top of the tent canvas that will now not need to be set up. After a few hours sleep they will get to start shuttling meat out of the wilderness before the grizzlies discover the carcass. After a few weeks when the aches and pains have been forgotten, and the memories have been sufficiently adjusted to remember only the thrill, they will start talking excitedly about the next hunt, when the other guy draws his tag!</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Red, White and Blue" oil on linen panel, 20"x 16" This beautiful young woman with her gorgeous red hair, pale complexion and color reflecting white blouse, set against this striking blue-green background, made for a very inspiring and enjoyable portrait painting exercise!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gallery Figurative</image:title>
<image:caption>"Sadie" oil on linen, 28"x 24" This was a commissioned portrait, of a young Northern Cheyenne girl in her "jingle dance" dress. Sadie, is even more of a bright, joyous, and lovable young lady than what I was able to capture...but that was the high mark for which I was aiming! I wanted to put her in a setting that reflects her deep Montana prairie/mountain Northern Cheyenne heritage. I love the beautiful soft colors that appear when the sun is just setting and the full moon is just rising, the earths shadow just beginning to show on the eastern horizon , but yet the sun still giving a warm glow to Sadie's face and the middle distance. Her dance regalia is made up of some of the same beautiful purples and blue-greens, and golds of the surrounding, breath taking hues of Mother Nature!</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Into the Limelight" oil on linen, 20"x 30" (Sold at "The Russell" art auction 2024). I hiked up to this ridge top in the Spanish Peaks area to watch the sun set and get some reference photos for this painting. When the sun had set, and I was enjoying the beautiful afterglow, I suddenly realized, that I had forgotten to bring any light source for my return trip down the mountain! I literally had to run down the trail, with my camera bouncing, to make it out before it got totally dark.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"When the Storm has Passed" oil on linen, 28"x 36" (Sold at "The Russell" auction 2023). I love the magical world, after the storm has passed, when there is a beautiful coating of fresh snow on everything...when the wildlife venture out to feed after being holed up for the duration of the storm. I set up and painted a little field study after such a storm, of this little cabin at the Porcupine Creek trail head. That led to this studio painting...enlarging upon the idea of the field study.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Wild Flowers" oil on linen, 32"x 32" (Available for sale). I especially enjoy doing figurative paintings, but it seems that I always end up having to put the paintings aside, to work on a "western" piece for some deadline for a show that is approaching. This time, I decided to just keep painting and was able to actually finish this figurative painting! Some of my best memories of my growing up days and years, are of our family outings to the "great outdoors" to the nearby mountains, for fishing or firewood cutting, or hunting. I am so thankful that I grew up in a time when there was still an "age of innocence"! A time before computers and the internet, and personal cell phones derailed the simplicity of outdoor living, and youthful adventures actually based in reality and not virtual!</image:caption>
